Highway 84 could shut down completely at any time! Be aware that Old LaHonda could quickly become a nightmare.

Well this is new! Descending 84 into Woodside, Kevin and I came across a new chunk of missing roadway.

Dropping into Woodside from Skyline, as Kevin and I do every single Tuesday & Thursday morning, we had a surprise… a new section of missing roadway, something that appears to have fallen away earlier this morning, based on the quickie/temporary nature of the lane closure. This could be something relatively minor, or a real major issue. We weren’t able to see the extent to which the pavement was undermined, or if there was a pipe running underneath the road at that point, something where water might have found its way around the outside and removed support for the roadway. If the latter, the fix might not be that tough. But if the hillside is slipping away in that area, we’re then looking at possibly-major roadwork that might shut down both lanes.

If 84 is shut down, the alternatives become Old LaHonda and Kings Mountain. With traffic diverted from 84, Old LaHonda would be an extremely dangerous road to ride, not to mention residents will blame anything in their way as being the source of all of the day’s problems. You don’t want to be that person.

Here’s the link to check for current conditions on 84.

We’ll keep an eye on this and try to send out an email if anything changes. Hopefully it’s not as bad as it looks. –MikeJ

7 cyclists start, 2 ride to the finish

Kevin, Karen, George, JR, Mark, Marcus, Kevin, Me… we had a good group starting up Kings this morning. My hopes of keeping people in sight didn’t work out so well; Kevin even gave me a handicap by having a seizure up near the top of Kings, but was back up and riding probably two minutes before I came on the scene.

We did start seeing a very light drizzle on the way up though, which managed to scare the entire group, aside from myself, Kevin (kid, not pilot) and Marcus back down Kings. Marcus lives up on Skyline though, so it’s tough to say what he would have done, but in short order, it was just me & Kevin heading south on Skyline, wondering if we’d be wishing we had rain jackets or had gone back down Kings with everyone else. Fortunately, we never saw anything more than that light drizzle, and once we headed towards West Old LaHonda, even that was gone.

The lengthy delays desending 84 where it’s just one lane? Not today! We had to wait maybe 30 seconds at each light, a far cry from the 15 minutes last week. Life is good!
